Inside The Kings

The Kings is a store you walk into. One hall, 12 pairs standing along its two runs, and a private room beyond it.

The walk

From the street to the room at the back, in the order you move through it.

  1. Arrival

    You begin outside, on a street, with the shopfront in front of you. Two stone lions sit either side of the doors. The glass is open and you can see down the length of the floor before you step in.

  2. The hall

    One room, and the whole of the shop. Marble underfoot, pale ribbed walls curving away on both sides, and an opening above. The counter stands at the back under the lion crest. A pale line runs across the floor and leads you through.

    The pairs stand on ledges cut into the walls, along two runs.

  3. The shoe run

    9 pairs stand along this run.

  4. The heel run

    3 pairs stand along this run.

  5. The Threshold

    At the far end of the hall the wall darkens into an arch. The line on the floor ends here. Where the world asks who you are

  6. The Private Room

    Through the arch, and unlike anything before it: dark stone instead of pale, low light along the walls, seating, and one piece under glass on a lit plinth. It is by invitation.
